What Should I Expect in the Pre-Adoption Evaluation?
We can help you through the stress, as we share the goal of finding a safe place for a child
A pre-adoption evaluation is a special type of psychological evaluation that should be conducted by someone who knows what they are doing. It generally takes several hours to complete. The couple will be interviewed together and separately and then be asked to complete a written or computerized test of personality.
Remember, the goal here is to assess parental preparedness (particularly with regard to socioemotional well-being, stress management, coping skills, etc.), especially given the added complexities and stress associated with adoption. Some of the questions may seem uncomfortable, but no one expects you to be a perfect person or perfect parent. Be honest in your interview. If you have fears or apprehensions about being a parent, it is OK to discuss that. We hope to create a safe space where you feel comfortable talking openly and honestly. We expect someone considering becoming a parent of an adopted child to have concerns or fears. Some of the questions you will be asked could cause an emotional reaction for you, such as questions about marriage or the potential adopted child’s biological parents. If you can consider the possibility of such questions before you join the interview, it can help you be more prepared and relaxed. The truth is, the psychologist interviewing you just wants you to be yourself.
Why Get a Pre-Adoption Evaluation With Us?
OUR PSYCHOLOGISTS ARE EXPERTS IN THE FIELD
Dr. Marina Wischnack is a licensed psychologist. As part of her clinical work she offers international pre-adoption psychological evaluations. International adoption agencies typically require a pre-adoption evaluation or adoption readiness evaluation as part of the mental health screening process for those seeking to adopt a child internationally. Countries differ in their requirements for these psychological evaluations.
Dr. Wischnack will collaborate with you and the adoption agency you are working with to ensure all requirements are met. At minimum, these evaluations will include an in-depth clinical interview as well as administration of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), which is a well-researched measure of personality and psychopathology in adults. If you are interested in learning more about completing an international pre-adoption psychological evaluation, Dr. Wischnack offers a free 15-minute phone consultation to discuss the process, estimated cost, and requirements for the specific country for which you are applying to.

Unfortunately, medical insurance does not pay for these types of assessments as the assessment is not directly related to a health condition.
Because of that, we make every effort to ensure that we complete assessments needed by adoption agencies, without doing more or less than is requested by the agency, in order to keep prices affordable.
